William Dimmock was the fourth child of David Dimmock & Mary Halsey born Oct-December, 1843 at Sandridge, Herts.
William’s mother had died prior to 1848 when his father married Mary Adams.
In 1851 the family was still living in Sandridge & William now had 2 older brothers, Alfred & George & a younger half-sister, Emma (1) as well as a step-sister, Susanna Adams.
William married Mary Ann Peacock in Oct-December 1864 at St Albans, Herts. Mary was christened September 6th, 1846 at the Abbey, St Albans, the daughter of Rebecca & Thomas Peacock, an agricultural labourer. Mary was recorded as working as a trimming weaver when she was living with her parents at Christopher Yard, St Albans.
In 1871 William & Mary were living in St Albans where William worked as a gardener & Mary was a hat maker. They had 3 children – Alfred (4), Ellen (3) & Kate (7 months).
William & Mary were living at New England St, St Albans in 1881 & William continued to be a domestic gardener. Son Alfred was also a gardener & daughter Ellen was a dressmaker. Daughter Kate was also still at home. Mary’s widowed father, Thomas Peacock, was living with the family at the time of the census.
William & Mary were still living at New England St in 1891 & Mary was now a laundress & William still a gardener. Daughter Nellie (Ellen) was still at home & working as a dressmaker.
Mary died in April-June 1894, aged 50, her death being registered at St Albans.
In 1901 widowed William was still working as a domestic gardener & living at 43 New England St. His sister, Lizzie, was living with him as his house keeper. The Herts Advertiser of August 24th, 1901 reports that while working for Mr T A Martin, Fishpool St, St Albans, William climbed a tree to gather apples. Unfortunately the tree split in two throwing him violently to the ground. William sustained a broken arm & extensive bruising for which he was treated at hospital.
By 1911 William had retired & his sister Lizzie was still living with him at 43 New England St. They had a 27 year old boarder, Edmund Thorn, who was a shop assistant for a fruiterer & fish monger.
William died in Jan-March 1918, aged 73, his death being registered at St Albans.
