John Ellis was the first child of William Ellis & Mary Allsop christened January 8th, 1804 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire.
John married Ann Morley on June 4th, 1827 at Pinxton. Witnesses at the wedding were George Hardy & Ann Cope. Ann was christened September 4th, 1807 at South Normanton, Derbyshire, the daughter of Mary & Thomas Morley.
In 1841 John & Ann were living at Normanton where John was an agricultural labourer. They had a large family by this time – George (13), Hannah (11), William (9), Mary (7), Thomas (5), Elizabeth (3), Richard (2) & Sarah (1).
Ann died in Oct-December 1845, her death being registered in Blackwell, Derbyshire.

John remarried on August 17th, 1847 in Pinxton. His new wife was Ann Bond (nee Shaw) whose husband Abraham Bond had died in 1842. Ann was born c1803 at Codnor Park, Derbyshire, daughter of Henry Shaw, collier. John was described as a collier & his father was William Ellis, labourer. Both John & Ann were noted as widowed. Witnesses at the wedding were Sarah Ann Hays & Matthew Lee.
In 1851 John & Ann were living at South Normanton & John was described as a labourer. With them were John’s children Thomas & Richard, both coal miners, Elijah, Elizabeth, a servant, & Sarah, a seamer. Also with them were Ann’s children from her first marriage – Dorothy Bond (21), Emma Bond (16) Elizabeth Bond (14), all seamers. There was also a 6 month old little boy, Abraham Bond & a 23 year old lodger, James Vardy, a miner.
Son George Ellis was married to Dorothy by 1851 & they were living at Longway Bank, Wirksworth where George was a coal miner. They had a 2 year old son, James, & also with them was George’s brother William, also a coal miner, & nephew Job Taylor, 6 months old.
By 1861 John & Ann were living at Birchwood, Alfreton & the only child left at home was Elizabeth, still described as a servant. John was described as a colliery labourer.
By 1881 John was out of work & lodging with Elizabeth & James Oakley, a miner also out of work, at Birchwood Lane, Birchwood, Alfreton, Derbyshire. There was another lodger, also out of work.
John, aged 81, died in Jan-March 1884, in Alfreton, Derbyshire.
