Edwin Ellis was the tenth child of John Ellis & Elizabeth Watson born July-September 1849 at Greenwich, Ripley, Derbyshire.
In 1851 Edwin was living with his parents & 3 sisters & a brother at Greenwich, Ripley, Derbyshire.
Edwin was still living at home with his parents at Greenwich in 1861 & at age 11 he was described as a coal miner.
In 1871 Edwin & his widowed father John (both coal miners) were with Edwin’s sister Matilda, now married to Richard Burgin, at the time of the census. They were living at Greaves St, Ripley.
Edwin (listed as Edward on IGI records) married Hannah Hemmet on January 28th, 1872 at Duffield, Derbyshire. Hannah was born November 20th, 1852 at Golden Valley, Swanwick, Derbyshire, the daughter of Mary Ann & John Hemmet, a miner & christened September 4th, 1853 at Ironville, Derbyshire.

By 1891 Edwin & family were living at 5 Court 1, London Rd, St Peter, Derby, & Edwin was now an engine stoker. Edwin’s wife was listed as Eliza on the census born c1854 in Swanwick. Sons William (no occupation given), Edward & Walter, both shoe finishers were at home, as was daughter Emma. [It seems likely that Hannah had died & Edwin had remarried. There is a marriage for Edward Ellis & Eliza Inchlieff (born 1853 in Swanwick, Derbyshire) in April-June 1884 at the Register Office, Basford. However no death for Hannah Ellis has been found.]
Edwin was summoned on a number of occasions in the 1890s by the School Board for failing to send his children to school.

Edwin died on January 28th 1895 at 5 Baker’s Buildings, London Rd, Derby, aged 45.

Daughter Emma married her cousin, Arthur Burgoyne (Burgin) (el.126.96.36.199), in 1905 at Derby. The 1911 census shows Emma & Arthur living at 153 Primrose Hill, Blackwell with their 3 children, Arthur, Edwin & Ethel & with them was Arthur’s mother Matilda (el.6.1.8).
Eliza was still working as a charwoman in 1911 & was now living at 52 Rivett St, Derby. There were no children at home, but she had 2 boarders.
