Matilda Ellis [el.6.1.4]

Matilda Ellis was the fourth child of John Ellis & Elizabeth Watson born Jan-March 1842 at Pinxton, Derbyshire.

In 1851 Matilda was living with her parents & 2 sisters & 2 brothers at Greenwich, Ripley, Derbyshire.

Matilda married Richard Burgin in July-September 1860, the marriage being registered at Walsall. Richard was born c1838 at Codnor, Derbyshire, the son of Ann & James Burgin, a boot & shoe maker.

In 1861 Richard & Matilda were living at Canneries, Walsall Foreign, Staffs where Richard was a coal miner.

By 1871 they had moved to Greaves St, Ripley, Derbyshire & they now had a 1 year old daughter Elizabeth. Richard’s name was given as Burgoyne in the census. Living with them was Matilda’s father, John, a 68 year old widower, & her brother Edwin (21), both coal miners.

In 1881 they were living at 118 Primrose Hill, Blackwell, Derbyshire & Richard continued to be a coal miner. Daughter Elizabeth was at home & there was also a 1 year old nurse child Ellis D Taylor, born Oct-December 1879 at Pinxton, Derbyshire. They also had a boarder Joseph Bamford (50).

In 1891 Matilda & Richard were living at Hillcote, Blackwell with ‘son’ Ellis (now listed as Burgin) & another son, Arthur (8).

By 1901 they had moved to Alfreton Colliery, Derbyshire & Richard was now described as a coal miner hewer, off work. Again their surname was given as Burgoyne in the census. At home were ‘sons’ Ellis Dawe Burgin, a colliery engine tester & Arthur, a colliery labourer. Again they had a boarder.

Richard died in Jan-March 1902, aged 63, the death being registered at Belper.
