John Ellis was the first child of John Ellis & Sarah Reynolds christened July 18th, 1803 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire.
John married Elizabeth who was born c1806 at Alfreton, Derbyshire. There is a marriage of John Ellis to Elizabeth Watson on September 22nd, 1823 at Pinxton, Derbyshire.
In 1851 John & Elizabeth were living at Greenwich, Ripley, Derbyshire where John was a coal miner. They had 5 children with them at the time of the census – Hannah (18), a worker for a candlewick manufacturer, Harriet (14), Matilda (9), William (4) & Edwin (1).
The family were still at Greenwich in 1861 & John was still a coal miner as were sons William & Edwin who were still at home.
Elizabeth died in Jan-March 1871, aged 64, at Ripley.
In 1871 widowed John was living with his daughter Matilda, now married to Richard Burgoyne (Burgin), a coal miner. They were living at Greaves St, Ripley with Matilda’s 1 year old daughter & John’s son Edwin.
John died in Jan-March 1872, aged 69, his death being registered at Belper which includes Ripley.
