Herbert Fry was the fifth child of John Fry & Mary Ann Newbery born July-September 1869 at Brighton, Sussex.
In 1871 Herbert was living with his parents & brothers & sisters at 48 Jersey St, Brighton.
Herbert was still living at home in 1881 at Hope Cottage, Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
Herbert joined the Royal Navy & at the time of the census in 1891 he was an able bodied seaman aboard the HMS Excellent which was in Portsmouth Harbour on the night of the census (April 5th).
Herbert married Harriett Mary Asbury in April-June 1900, the marriage being registered at Islington. Harriett was born April-June 1875 at Clerkenwell, Middlesex, the daughter of Mary & Alfred Asbury, a cabinet maker. In 1891 Harriett was living with her parents in Clerkenwell & was an envelope folder.
In 1901 Herbert & Harriett were living at 219 Essex Rd, Islington & Herbert was described as an electric light wireman.
In 1911 Herbert & Harriett were still living in Islington, now at 24 River Rd, Upper Holloway. Herbert was described as looking after electric lights in a provision factory. They had had 4 children but only 2 were surviving – Eileen Olive (6) & Nora Phyllis (2).
