Anne Fry was the fourth child of William Fry & Elizabeth Stanbridge christened March 30th, 1845 at Ardingley.
In 1861 Anne was a servant for lodging house keeper Catherine Sugwell at Middle St, Brighton.
Anne married Henry Summarsell on April 20th, 1869 at Cowfold. Henry was born c1833 at West Grinstead, the son of Elizabeth Barnet & Henry Summarsell, a blacksmith.
In 1871 Anne & Henry were living at Cowfold St, Cowfold where Henry was a grocer employing 2 men & 1 boy. They had a 1 month old son, Henry at the time of the census. Nearby lived Ann’s parents & brother Frederick Fry at Allfrey’s farmhouse, Cowfold.
By 1881 Henry had retired at the age of 47. The family were living at Preston, Brighton & had grown to include Henry (10), William (8), Bertha (6), Walter (5), Herbert (3) & Francis (1 month). Living with them was niece Kate Pennifold (17), daughter of Anne’s sister Elizabeth Fry & Joseph Pennifold. She was described as ‘assistant to the household’. There was also a domestic servant, Jane Wakeham (15).
In Jan-March 1883 the death of Henry Summarsell is recorded at Steyning, aged 49.
In 1891 Anne was still living at Ditchling Rise, Preston with all the children plus another daughter, Lillian, aged 9. Living with them was Anne’s mother Elizabeth Fry now widowed, & Esther Fry – her sister-in-law married to John Fry. Also visiting was Anne’s niece Annie Lewry (23) daughter of Mary Fry & Henry Lewry. Her mother Elizabeth died soon after the census in 1891, the death being registered at Steyning.
In 1901 Anne (56) was living at Nutfield Rd, Mersham, Reigate with her son Walter, a grocer employing an assistant Charles Patterson (18). Annie Lewry is still living with her aunt & is unmarried at the age of 33 & is described as a general servant. Anne’s son Henry (30) was living on his own at Peters St, Brighton & was a grocer’s assistant & traveler. Son William (28) was married to Louisa and was a draper shopkeeper at Rowlands Rd, Heene, Worthing. Son Herbert (23), a market gardener, was living with sisters Bertha (26), housekeeper, & Lillian (19), a milliner, at Villa Bradford, Kingston by Sea. Living with them was 20 year old ‘cousin’ Frederick Samuel Fry (Anne Fry & Frederick’s father Albert Edward Fry were cousins), a soldier in the 1st Royal Sussex Regiment. John Mabely Fry (21) was also boarding with them & was a gardeners labourer.
Anne died in April-June 1904, aged 59, the death being registered at Steyning (which includes Kingston by Sea).
