Frederick William Fry was the first child of Frederick Samuel Fry & Alice Maud Witkowski born April-June 1909 in Belfast, Co Antrim, Ireland.
The 1911 census of Ireland shows Frederick’s mother Alice living at the Curragh Military Camp, Kildare, but father Frederick (recorded as Colour Sergeant, Royal Sussex regiment) was not present on the night of the census. Frederick, aged 2 had a little sister, Edith, aged 1.
Frederick was to have 2 more brothers before sadly his father, a Company Sergeant Major in the Royal Sussex Regiment, was killed on the first day of the Battle of Loos in 1915.
On August 18th, 1934 Frederick married Phyllis Ellen Groom at the Parish Church of St John at Woking, Surrey. Frederick, like his father, was a soldier & gave his address as 5 The Broadway, Knaphill, east of Woking. Witnesses at the wedding were Frederick’s mother Alice Maude & Phyllis’ father, Charles Groom. Phyllis was born February 13th, 1909 in Earlefield, Wandsworth, the daughter of Louisa Kate & Charles Groom. Charles was a clerk at the time of the wedding, but in 1911 was serving in the Army Service Corps.
