John Fry was the fourth child of Robert Fry & Jane Burtenshaw christened June 18th, 1843 at St. Mary’s parish church, Hartfield.
John was living at home at Harts Farm in 1851 & 1861.
On May 22nd, 1869 John married Elizabeth Brett at Camberwell, Surrey. Elizabeth was born June 8th, 1838, at Romford, Essex.
In 1871 John & Elizabeth were living at Hut Cottage, Ifield, New Shoreham with their 11 month old son William. John was an agricultural labourer. Elizabeth was born c1840 at Romford, Essex.
In 1881 John and Elizabeth were living at Peters Farm, Rusper, New Shoreham with children William (now 10), Elizabeth (9), Arthur (7), Mary E (5), John & Kate (3 year old twins) & Alice (3 months).
The family were still living at Peters Farm, Rusper in 1891. At home were children William, Arthur, John, Kate, Alice and Emily (4 years old). At the time of the 1891 census daughter Mary was a domestic servant for the Beaumont family living at Wimland Rd, Rusper.
John died in 1897 at Rusper, Sussex, aged 53. Kelly’s Directory of Sussex for 1899 lists Mrs John Fry as farmer of Peter’s farm
Widowed Elizabeth (now 62 years old) was farming at Soles Farm, Nuthurst, Horsham in 1901. With her were John (23), Elizabeth (29), Alice (20) & Emily (14).
In 1911 Elizabeth & son John & daughter Emily were living at Sprinkitt Farm, Bolney, Sussex. John was described as a farmer. Living with them & working on the farm was Elizabeth's grandson, Thomas John Challen (14), the son of Elizabeth's daughter Mary Ellen who had married Thomas Challen in 1896.
Elizabeth died in 1926 at Capel, near Dorking
