Jane Freeth was the tenth child of William Freeth & Sarah Gutteridge born January 8th, 1851 & christened February 9th, 1851 at Smethwick, Staffs.
Jane was still at home at 6 Roebuck Lane in 1861 with her parents & brothers & sister.
In 1871 Jane was still at Roebuck Lane, both her parents having died. Head of the household was her brother John, a glass flattener, & also there was sister Sarah, a screw turner, nephew Leonard Freeth & niece Mary Blackman (both children of sister Hannah). Jane was working as a housemaid.
Jane married George Whitehouse on September 15th, 1872 at West Bromwich. George was born November 29th, 1847 at West Bromwich, the son of Mary & William Whitehouse, an iron worker.
In 1881 Jane & George were living at 69 Elsley Rd, Battersea, Surrey & George was a glass packer. They had 4 children at this time – Ada J (8), George W (6), Albert E (4) & Frank E (1). Also with them was a niece Clara Whitehouse (18), an unemployed domestic servant.
Jane & George (Whetstone in Ancestry.co.uk index) were living at 58 Eversleigh Rd, Battersea in 1891 & George was still a glass packer. There were 8 children at home – Ada, George William, a print reader, Albert Edward, a telegraph messenger, Frank Edward, Samuel Henry (9), Frederick (5), Lillian (3) & Edith (1).
By 1901 George & Jane were at 17 Elsley Rd, Battersea with children Ada, Frank, a draughtsman, Samuel, a solicitor’s clerk, Frederick, an insurance clerk, Lillian, Edith & Arthur (8).
George & Jane were still living at 17 Elsley Rd in 1911. Their address on the census shows the road to be in Lavender Hill, New Wandsworth. George was still a glass packer with a lead & glass manufacturer. At home were Ada, described as mother’s help, James, a law clerk, Lillian & Edith, both dressmakers & Arthur, a mechanical engineer. It was noted on the census that they had had 10 children, only 9 of whom were still living.
Daughter Edith emigrated to USA on September 30th, 1913 sailing to Boston on the SS Laconia. On October 10th of that year she married Henry Crawford Hallock in Boston, Massachusetts. She was aged 24 & a dressmaker & Henry was an electrician. The 1930 US census shows Henry (41) & Edith living in Beverly, Boston where Henry was a proprietor of a battery station. They had 3 children with them – Henry R (15), Lillian (19) & Arthur (7).
Jane died on November 24th, 1918 in Battersea, Surrey.
George died on August 9th, 1929 in Battersea, Surrey.
