Mary Freeth [fh.4.6.1.7.1.4]

Mary Freeth was the fourth child of Samuel Freeth & Jane Rebecca Lambert born July-September 1863 at Smethwick, Staffs.

In 1871 the family were still at Smethwick but now living at Causer St. Mary now had 5 sisters.

By 1881 the family had moved to 4 Birmingham Rd, Oldbury where Mary’s father was a glass maker. Mary had 5 sisters & a brother at home.

In 1891 Mary was still living at home at Birmingham St, now #8, along with 4 sisters & her brother.

In April-June 1892 Mary married Charles Hamar Lloyd at Christ Church, Oldbury. Charles was born c1868 at Eye, Herefordshire, the son of Mary Ann & Thomas Lloyd, a carpenter. In 1891 Charles was working as a grocer’s manager on the High St, Smethwick which is where Mary’s widowed mother Jane was working as a butcher in 1901.

In 1901 Mary & Charles were living at 304 Oldbury Rd, Smethwick, next to the Five Ways Tavern, where Charles was a grocer. They had 3 children – Ethel L (6), Charles W (3) & Edith M (5 months). Charles’ sister May (14) was with them at the time of the census. Also living with them was a grocer’s apprentice Clifford W Bennett (17).

In 1911 Mary & Charles were listed at 297 Oldbury Rd, Smethwick & Mary was described as head of the household & was a grocer & provision dealer. Husband Charles was a grocer manager. Their 3 children Ethel Louis, Charles Wilfred & Edith Mary were all at home.
