Sarah Ann Horton [h.1.10.3]

Sarah Ann Horton was the third child of Henry Horton & Sarah Ann Hancock born c1852 at West Bromwich, Staffs.

By 1861 the family had moved to the High St, Knutton, Silverdale, Staffs. Sarah had 3 sisters & 3 brothers at home.

On September 6th, 1869 Sarah married William Heath, the marriage being registered at Wolstanton.
William was born in 1851 at Horton, Leek, Staffs, the son of Harriet & Richard Heath, a labourer at the coal pit.

In 1871 Sarah Ann & William were living at Beswick St, Tunstall, Staffs & William was an engine cleaner. They had a 1 year old son Richard.

By 1881 they had moved to 24 Haywood Place, Burslem, Staffs & William was now an oil refiner. The family had grown to include Richard, Sarah A (9), William H (7), Samuel (5), Clara (3) & Eliza H (9 months). Sadly little Eliza died later that year.

Sarah Ann died in Oct-December 1883, aged only 32, the death being registered at Wolstanton.

William remarried on December 8th, 1884 at Wrexham, Denbighshire.  His second wife was Margaret Smith, born c1853 at Wilderspool, Cheshire, the daughter of Mary & John Smith, a groom.

In 1891 William & his wife Margaret (39) were living at Bishopgate Green, Coventry. William was described as a steam engine fitter & children from his first marriage still at home were William, an iron polisher, Samuel, a printer’s assistant, & Ernest (9). Daughter Clara was listed with her aunt Harriet, Sarah’s sister, & family at the time of the census. There were 2 additional children, presumably from his second marriage – Maggie (4) & Harriet (2), both born in Coventry.

William & Margaret were still living in Coventry in 1901, at 86 Eagle St. William’s children from his first marriage had all left home. He & Margaret now had 3 children with them – Maggie, a silk weaver, Harriett & Ted (6).

In 1911 William & Margaret were still living at the same address & William was now described as a millwright working for a motor manufacturer. Their 3 children were still at home & son Ted was now working as a machine hand at a motor manufacturer. It was noted on the census that Margaret had had 8 children, only 3 of whom survived.

William died on August 21st, 1927 at 86 Eagle St, Coventry, aged 76.  Probate was granted on September 26th, 1927 to Bernard Richard Masser, solicitor, & his son Samuel Heath, a licensed victualler.  His effects were £1,566.14s.8d.
