Henry Horton [h.1.10]

Henry Horton was the tenth child of Henry Horton & Esther Lines born May 24th, 1823 & christened June 15th, 1823 at All Saints, West Bromwich. Staffs.

In 1841 Henry was still at home with his parents at Walsall St, West Bromwich. There were 4 other brothers at home as well as 2 sisters & a visiting sister-in-law. Henry was a forgeman.

Henry married Sarah Ann Hancock on March 2nd, 1847 at Christ Church, West Bromwich. Sarah was born November 6th, 1824 & christened October 24th, 1825 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham, the daughter of Thomas & Harriet Hancock.

By 1851 Henry & Sarah were living at Walsall St, West Bromwich with their 2 children – Henrietta (3) & Joseph (1). Henry was a stock taker in the iron works & Sarah was a tailoress. They had 2 lodgers.

By 1861 the family had moved to Knutton, Silverdale, Staffs & Henry was now a forgeman. At home were Henrietta, Joseph, a forgeman, Sarah A (9), Harriet L (7), Clara Ann (5), Henry (3) & Jeremiah (6 months).

They had moved again by the time of the 1871 census & were living at Bank St, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Sarah was a tailoress & Henry was a cutter down at forge as was son Joseph, & son Henry was a pitter at the forge. Other children still at home were Clara, Jeremiah, William H (6) & daughter Henrietta, now wife of John Simcock, was also visiting with her son John H Simcock (6 months). Henrietta was a machinist sempstress, who sadly died later that year.

Henry & Sarah were still living in Tunstall in 1881 but in a new street which had not been named or numbered. Henry was still a forgeman as was son Jeremiah who was still at home. Son William was working as a bricklayer & also with them was grandson John Simcock, & a domestic servant Martha Swindle.

Henry & Sarah sailed from Liverpool to New York in 1884 on the SS Arizona, arriving May 26th. With them was son William (19) & John (11) who was listed as John Horton on the ship’s manifest, who was presumably grandson John Simcock. Sons Joseph and Jeremiah had already emigrated to the USA in the early 1880’s.

Sarah died on December 6th, 1885 in Montpelier, Idaho.

In 1900 widowed Henry was listed on the US census as living at Bear Lake, Montpelier Co, Idaho. He was boarding with the Horsley family & was described as a 77 year old labourer. It was noted on the census that the year of his immigration to the USA was 1886.
