George Horton [h.1.2.2]

George Horton was the second child of John Horton & Eliza Andrews born March 2nd, 1835 at Birmingham & christened March 27th, 1838 at St Martin, Birmingham.

In 1841 George & his parents were living at Matt St, Birmingham along with his 3 sisters.

In 1851 George was still living with his widowed father Matt St, Court 3 House 2. George was a jeweller. Also at home were sisters Emily, Ann, & Jane & brother James.

George married Eliza Child on September 13th, 1856 at the Church of St John in the parish of Birmingham. Both George & Eliza were 21 years old, & George was described as a jeweller journeyman. Eliza was born c1835 at Birmingham, the daughter of Thomas Child, a brass founder. George gave his residence at the time of marriage as 47 Great King St, Birmingham. Living at 48 Great King St in 1861 were John & Elizabeth Lewis, the parents of William Lewis, one of the witnesses at the wedding, who was also a jeweller.

George & Eliza's marriage

In 1861 George & Eliza were living at Alma St, Oak Terr, Aston Manor, Birmingham. George was described as a jeweller, journeyman signet ring maker. They had 2 children – Eliza (3) & Arthur (1).

By 1871 George had become a boot & shoe dealer & he & Eliza were living at 31 Constitution Hill, St George, Birmingham. Children at home were Arthur, George (7) & Ada (6).

At the time of the 1881 census George had returned to being a jeweller, as was his son Arthur, who was at home at this time. George & Eliza had moved to 8 Villa Grove, Handsworth, Staffs. Son George, now a clerk & daughter Ada, a pupil teacher, were also at home.

In 1891 George & Eliza were living at 88 Wills St, Aston Manor, Birmingham & George was described as a general jeweller. Son George was at home & was working as a merchant clerk & son Arthur was also at home & his occupation was a gem setter. The family were listed as ‘Worton’ on Ancestry.co.uk index.

Eliza died in Jan-March 1900, aged 64, her death being registered at West Bromwich.

In 1901 widowed George was found at 36 Frances Rd, Handsworth with his son George. They both worked as jewellers. They had a 22 year old house keeper, Bertha Allen.

George was still living at 36 Frances Rd in 1911 & was now a retired jeweller. Living with him was son Arthur, now widowed, & also a jeweller (ring maker). Arthur's 3 children were with him – Ida (18), their housekeeper, George Arthur (15), a jeweller (brooch maker) & William Frank (13) still at school.

There is a death for George Horton, aged 83, registered at West Bromwich in Jan-March, 1917.
