John Horton was the second child of Henry Horton & Esther Lines christened March 31st, 1807 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham.
John married Eliza Andrews on May 10th, 1832 at Aston Juxta, Birmingham, Warks. Eliza was born c1814 in Warwickshire.
In 1841 John & Eliza were living at Matt St, Birmingham where John was a carpenter & joiner. They had 4 children at this time – Emily (8), George (6), Eliza (3) & Ann (1).
Eliza died before 1851 when widowed John was still living at Matt St, Court 3 House 2 at the time of the census. He was described as a carpenter in the census & with him were Emily, a dressmaker, George, a jeweller, Ann, Jane (7) & James (3).
In 1861 John was still at Matt St, with children Emily, now described as a milliner & dressmaker, John (18) a jeweller, Jane doing domestic duties & James, a jeweller.
John was still working as a joiner & cabinet maker in 1871 but was now living at 3 Clifford Place, Aston Manor, Birmingham. Daughters Emily, now a dress & mantle maker, Ann, a milliner & Jane, a sewing machine worker were living with him as were sons John, still a jeweller & James, a signet ring maker.
John died in July-September 1875, aged 67, the death being registered at Aston, Birmingham. Interestingly the entry on the BMD register gives his name as John Vear Horton. John & Eliza’s last son, James, was registered as James Vere Horton on his birth certificate.
At the time of the 1881 census Emily, Ann, Jane & John were still living together at 140 Wheeler St, Aston Manor. Emily, Ann & Jane were dressmakers & John was a jeweller.
All 4 were still together in 1891 at 220 Wheeler St. Emily & Ann were still dressmakers & John was still a jeweller. There was no occupation given for Jane. There was also a niece Eleanor E Horton (9), daughter of brother James, with them at the time of the census.
In 1901 68 year old Emily (Emma in census), described as a housekeeper, Ann (60), a dressmaker & John (59), still a jeweller, were living at 109 Hall Rd, Handsworth, Birmingham. Niece Eleanor Horton was still living with them.
In 1911 Emily & Ann, now retired dressmakers, were living at Verecot, Mere Green Rd, Aston, Warks. Niece Eleanor Horton was still living with them & was now a music teacher working at home.
