Joseph Hale Horton [h.1.4.4]

Joseph Hale Horton was the fourth child of James Horton & Elizabeth Hale born at Sedgley, Staffs & christened January 13thth, 1839 at Gornall, Staffs.

In 1841 Joseph was with his father James, a cordwainer, at Gornall Wood, Lower Gornall, Sedgley, Staffs. His mother, Elizabeth, at the time of the census was visiting her parents-in-law, Henry & Esther Horton at Walsall St, West Bromwich with Joseph’s sisters Jane (6) & Esther (6 months).

In 1851 Joseph & his parents & brothers & sisters were living at Gornall Wood, Lower Gornall, Sedgley.

By 1861 the family had moved to Himley Rd, Lower Gornall, Sedgley & Joseph was working as a labourer.

Joseph married in 1862 at St James, Dudley, Staffs.  Confusingly there are 2 records of Joseph Horton marrying at that time – one on November 23rd 1862 to Hannah Baker & the other on December 28th, 1862 to Anna Baker.  Hannah/Anna was born c1842, at Sedgley, Staffs.

In 1871 Joseph & Hannah were living at Midland Terrace, Park Gate, Rawmarsh, Yorks & Joseph was still working as a labourer. They had a 1 year old daughter Sarah A.

Joseph & Hannah had moved to 3 Holm Flat Row, Parkgate, Greasbrough, Yorks by the time of the 1881 census & Joseph was a labourer at the colliery. They had 4 children at home – James (9), Arthur Herbert (6), Willie (5) & Mary (7 months). Sadly Sarah Ann had died in 1874, aged 4 years.

The family were still at the same address in 1891 & Joseph’s occupation was given as general labourer, as was son James. Sons Arthur & Willey were both horse drivers at the colliery. Daughter Mary was also still at home.

Joseph & Hannah continued to live at 3 Holm Flat, Greasbrough & in 1901 Joseph was a surface labourer at the colliery. Arthur & Willey were both coal hewers & daughter Mary was still at home.

In 1911 Joseph & Hannah were still living at the same address. Joseph, aged 72, & son Willie who was living with them were both labourers above ground at the colliery. It was noted on the census form that they had had 12 children, only 3 of whom were still living. It was also noted that Joseph was deaf due to an accident at work.

Hannah died in April-June 1913, aged 70, the death being registered at Rotherham.

Joseph died in July-September, 1930, aged 91, his death being registered at Rotherham.
