Henry Norman Horton [h.1.7.3.2]

Henry Norman Horton was the second child of Richard Horton & Martha Elizabeth Stone born Oct-December, 1881 at West Bromwich.

By 1891 Henry was living at 232-234 High St, West Bromwich where his father was a grocer. Henry had 4 brothers & a sister.

In 1901 the family were living at 37 New St, West Bromwich & Henry was acting as assistant grocer for his father. There were 3 younger brothers & a sister still at home.

Henry married Ellen Pritchard in Oct-December 1907 at West Bromwich. Ellen was born July-September 1885 in West Bromwich.

In 1911 Henry & Ellen were living at 59 High St, West Bromwich where Henry was a grocer & provision merchant. It appears that Henry had taken over his father's grocery business. They had an 18 year old general servant, Annie Danks.

Henry carried on trading as a grocer under the name of R. Horton & Sons. In 1914 an article in the London Gazette of July 14th reveals that Henry was centrally involved in the declaration of the insolvency of his father’s grocery business at 59 High St, West Bromwich.

Henry enlisted in the 10th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment during the 1st World War. He was killed in action, aged 35, on May 6th, 1917 & is buried at the 'Railway Dugouts Burial Ground', Zillebeke, Belgium. Henry is listed in the roll of honour of those dying in the 1914-18 war at St Leonard's Parish Church, Clent.

 

At the time of his death Henry's wife, Ellen, was living at 'Avonbury', Church Avenue, Holy Cross, Clent, Stourbridge, Worcs.
