Harry Orlando Horton was the first child of Henry Horton & Sarah Edge born June 1879 at Normacot Rd, Longton, Staffs.
In 1881 Harry was with his parents at Upper Normacot Rd, Stone, Staffs.
In 1891 the family were living at Argyle Terrace, Chaplin Rd, Longton, Staffs.
By 1901 they were living at School House, Longton where Harry’s father was a school master. Harry was a student at Battersea Training College but at home at the time of the census.
In 1911 Harry was boarding with Emma & Spencer Stevens, a boot maker, & their family at 25 Noel Rd, Edgbaston. Harry was a school teacher.
Harry married his cousin, Elizabeth S Edge, on June 1st 1912 at Christ Church, Birmingham. Elizabeth Sarah was born Jan-March 1881 at Birmingham, the daughter of Mary Ann & Thomas Edge (brother of Sarah Edge). (In 1901 census Elizabeth S Edge (20) was living at home at Link Rd, Edgbaston, Birmingham with her widowed mother Mary Ann & sister & brothers. Elizabeth was a school teacher.)
Harry enlisted with the Royal Engineers on November 23rd, 1915 & was mobilised October 23rd, 1916. His address at the time of enlisting was 77 Hampton Rd, Birchfields, Birmingham & he gave his height as 5ft 4ins. His unit was the 2nd Field Survey Battalion & Harry was a photographer, for which he was paid one shilling per day. Harry served at home until going to France on May 15th, 1917 with the British Expeditionary Force. He was awarded the British War Medal & the Victory Medal which he received in 1921.
