Margaret Lister [li.6]

Margaret Lister was the sixth child of Thomas Lister & Ann Pattison christened May 15th, 1824 at Ormesby, Yorks.

In 1841 Margaret was living at home with her parents & family at Ormesby.

In 1851 Margaret was a farmer of 30 acres at Ormesby & living with her & working on the farm was her brother Thomas (24) & sister Isabel (16). Visiting them was nephew John Robinson (2) son of Margaret’s sister Ann who had married Robert Robinson. Also visiting at the time of the census were John & Hannah Watson, William Edmond & John Green, all railway labourers. Living next door was brother John Lister & his wife Elizabeth & their 11 month old son Benjaman.

Margaret married Henry Brown on August 24th, 1853 at the Parish Church, Middlesbrough. One of the witnesses was Margaret's sister Maria Lister. Henry was the son of Elizabeth & Christopher Brown born c1826 at Bedale, Yorks.

Margaret & Henry (Bown in Ancestry.co.uk index) were living at New St, Thornaby, Yorks in 1861 with their children Elizabeth (6) & William H (2). Henry was a blacksmith. With them was an apprentice blacksmith Joseph Gowland & an engine fitter Robert Hutchinson & his wife to be, Elizabeth.

In 1871 Margaret & Henry were still living at New St, & Henry was a blacksmith & innkeeper. Both daughter Elizabeth Ann (16) & son William Henry (12) were still living at home & visiting was nephew Thomas Lister, son of Margaret’s brother John & wife Elizabeth. Thomas was also a blacksmith.

Henry was still working as a blacksmith in Thornaby in 1881 & he & Margaret were living at 36 Mandale Rd. With them was daughter Elizabeth A who had married John Macrae in 1878 & their son Thomas H, aged 1. The whereabouts of John Macrae is not known. Henry & Margaret's son William had married Louisa Buttle in 1879 & they & son Henry (1) & they were living at 3 New St, Thornaby where William was a blacksmith.

In 1891 Henry & Margaret were living at Danby, Yorks & Henry was now a retired blacksmith. Daughter Elizabeth (36) was still living with them & listed with surname Brown & described as single (presumably her husband had died). Sadly her son Thomas Henry had died in 1882, aged 3. Also visiting at the time of the census were 3 of son William & Louisa’s children – Henry (11), Robert (9) & Elizabeth Jane (6). William & Louisa were still living at Thornaby & they had 2 younger children – Louisa (4) & William (1 month).

Daughter Elizabeth married Richard Lister in 1893. Richard was the son of Margaret’s brother Thomas Lister [li.7] & therefore Elizabeth’s cousin. Margaret & Henry came to live with Elizabeth & Richard at Thimbleby in their latter years.

Henry Brown died aged 71 on February 15th, 1898 at Thimbleby, N. Yorks, the informant being son-in-law Richard Lister. Probate was granted at York on December 7th, 1898 to son-in-law Richard Lister, yeoman, & Henry’s effects were £2,087.16s.4d.

In 1901 Margaret, now 76 years old, was living with daughter Elizabeth & her husband Richard at the time of the census. Richard (47) was a farmer living at Great Ayton, Stokesley. Elizabeth & Richard had a daughter Hannah Margaret, aged 6. Living with the family was niece Elizabeth Jane Brown (16), daughter of William & Louisa. William & Louisa themselves were still living at Thornaby where William was still a blacksmith & at home were Henry (21) a blacksmith, Robert (19) a cartwright, Louisa (14), William (9) & Thomas (7).

Margaret died on October 3rd, 1901 aged 77, at Great Ayton, Stokesley, the informant of her death being her son-in-law Richard Lister.
