Richard Lister was the first child of Thomas Lister & Hannah Herring christened November 16th, 1852 at West Acklam, Yorks.
In 1861 Richard & his parents & family were living at Ormesby, Yorks.
He was still at home in 1871 & working as an assistant carter to his father. They were living at High St, Ormesby.
At the time of the 1881 census Richard was a farmer of 5 acres still living at Ormesby with his younger brothers John (16) & Frederick (8).
In 1891 Richard was living at Thimbleby, near Osmotherley, N. Yorks & was described as a wood leader & farmer (a wood leader apparently carried wooden props to a mine by horse & cart). With Richard was his brother James, a farmer, who had married Elizabeth Blenkhorn in 1890. They had a number of farm servants. Richard was also listed in the 1891 census as a lodger (as was his brother Frederick) at West Burton, Aysgarth, near Richmond. It is possible that he travelled between the two villages & hence was listed on the census for both.
In April-June 1893 Richard had married his cousin Elizabeth Ann Macrae (nee Brown), (daughter of his aunt Margaret Lister [li.6] & Henry Brown christened September 3rd, 1854 at Thornaby, Yorks). Elizabeth had previously been married to John Macrae.
Richard & Elizabeth lived at Thimbleby until at least 1898 when Richard was the informant of the death of his father-in-law Henry Brown.
In 1901 Richard was now a farmer living at Guisborough Rd, Great Ayton, Yorks & he & Elizabeth had a 6 year old daughter, Hannah Margaret. Living with them was Elizabeth’s mother, Margaret Brown (nee Lister), aged 76 & living on her own means. Also living with them was a niece Elizabeth Jane Brown (16), daughter of Elizabeth's brother William H Brown. In October 1901 Richard was the informant of the death of his mother-in-law (& aunt) Margaret Brown.
In 1911 Richard and Elizabeth were living at Kirkby, nr. Stokesley where Richard was a farmer. Daughter Hannah was still living at home.
Richard died aged 66, in Kirby in Cleveland on February 20th, 1919. Administration was granted in London on May 1st, 1919 to widow Elizabeth Ann. His effects were £196.10s.
Daughter Hannah married Sydney Shore in April-June 1921 at Stokesley.
Elizabeth died on May 18th, 1937 at The Oaks, Stokesley. Probate was granted on 18th June 1937 at York to daughter Hannah Margaret and her husband Sydney Shore, a postman. Her effects amounted to £1130.
The children of Richard Lister & Elizabeth Ann Macrae (nee Brown) were:
li.7.1.1 Hannah Margaret Lister born December 19th, 1894 at Thimbleby, Nr Northallerton, died October-December 1977 at Northallerton.
