Robert Lister was the fifth child of Thomas Lister & Hannah Herring born April-June 1860 at Ormesby, Yorks.
In 1861 Robert & his parents & family were living at Ormesby, Yorks.
In 1871 Robert Lister (12) was listed as a pupil at Turners Hospital, Kirkleatham, Yorks. This ‘hospital’ was actually an almshouse set up to care for ‘10 old men & 10 old women & as a charity school for 10 poor boys & 10 poor girls who were orphans or neglected children’.
By 1891 Robert had married Sarah Elizabeth & was living at Brick Kiln Cottage, Sharrow, Ripon & they had 4 children – Herbert (4), Robert (3), Edith M (2) & Sarah E (6 months). He was working as a timber merchant waggoner. Sarah was born c1867 at Osmotherley, Yorks.
Robert’s wife Sarah Elizabeth died in April-June 1897, her death being registered at Northallerton, aged 30.
In 1901 Robert was found lodging at Bowmans Yard, Northallerton & still working as a timber waggoner. He was obviously not able to keep the family together after his wife’s death as the 4 youngest children, Sarah (11), James (10), Bella (8) & Annie (6) were all boarding with the Santon family at Naylors Yard, Northallerton, the head of the household George being a chimney sweep. The older children were all working – Herbert (15) was an agricultural labourer living at Church House, Whorlton, Stokesley, Edith (14) was a domestic servant for the Sumbler family living in Westerdale, Guisborough, the head of the household James Sumbler was a blacksmith.
