James Peace Pallister [p.1.6.5.3.9]

James Peace Pallister was the ninth child of John Pallister & Sarah Thompson born at Greencroft, Lanchester & christened August 7th, 1834 at Lanchester.

In 1841 James was living at Hornsby Hill, Lanchester with his parents & 8 brothers & sisters.

At the time of the 1851 census James was with his sister Hannah & her husband Robert Siddle, a butcher, & their family at New Cassop, Co Durham. James was an apprentice butcher.

On June 5th, 1858 James married Mary Ann Hall at All Saints, Lanchester. Both were 24 years old at the time of the wedding & both signed the register. Witnesses at the wedding were Cuthbert Hall & Joseph Thompson Pallister, James' brother. Mary Ann was christened August 16th , 1833 at Lanchester, Co Durham, the daughter of Margaret & Cuthbert Hall, a woodman.

James & Mary Ann were living at Toll Bar, Greencroft, Lanchester in 1861. James was a mason.

Mary Ann died in July-September 1867, aged 33, her death being registered at Durham.

In April-June 1868 James married Hannah Hunter, the marriage being registered at Gateshead. Hannah was born at Marley Hill, Whickham & christened December 23rd, 1849 at Whickham, Co Durham, the daughter of Jane Mitchelson & Thomas Hunter, a banksman at Whickham Colliery.

In 1871 James & Hannah were living at Ornsby Hill, Lanchester. They had 2 children – John Thomas (1) & a 3 week old daughter Sarah Jane. James, who was described as a mason, was living next door to borthers William & Joseph, also stone cutters & masons respectively.

James & Hannah were still at Ornsby Hill in 1881 & James was still a mason. Son John Thomas was still at home & there were 2 new arrivals – Hannah (5) & 4 month old Ethel May. Daughter Sarah Jane was visiting her grandparents Jane & Thomas Hunter at the time of the census at Oakeys Cottages, Tanfield. Lodging with James & Hannah was James’ nephew John Pallister (27), who was a mason & sculptor. John was the son of James’ brother William Pallister, now deceased.

In 1891 James & Hannah were still at Ornsby Hill, now at number 2 Ornsby Hill Terrace. Son John was a gardener, Sarah Jane was a milliner & Hannah was a dressmaker’s apprentice. Also at home was Ethel May & James V (5).

James was still working as a mason in 1901 & he & Hannah were still at Ormsby Hill. Ethel May was still at home, as was James Vincent, a solicitor’s junior clerk.

There is a death for James P Pallister, aged 79, in Jan-March 1912 recorded at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
