Thomas Pallister [p.1.6.8.7.2]

Thomas Pallister was the second child of John Cuthbert Pallister & Maria Lumley born September 23rd, 1851 at Birtley, Co Durham.

In 1861 Thomas was living with his parents & brother & 2 sisters at Frume Cottages, Birtley.

The family was still living at Birtley in 1871, now at Harris Bank, & Thomas was now working as a joiner.

Thomas married Dorothy Jane Ferry on October 19th, 1872 at St Mary’s, Gateshead, Co Durham. Witnesses at the wedding were Joseph Hepple & Robert Shepherd. Dorothy was born December 17th, 1851 in Nelson St, Gateshead, the daughter of Jane Matthewson & Christopher Ferry, a joiner. In 1871 Dorothy was working as a housemaid for the vicar of Lamesley, Co Durham – Robert Snape.

By 1881 Thomas & Dorothy had moved to Weston Common, St Mary Extra, Hampshire where they were living at Laurel House (Butchers Shop) & Thomas had become a master butcher. They had 3 children by this time – Maria (7) & Jane (5) both born in Co Durham & a son John L, aged 2 months born in Hampshire. There had been 2 more children who had both died in infancy.

Thomas & Dorothy lived for a few years in Middlesex where their next 2 children were born before returning to Co Durham in the late 1880s.

At the time of the 1891 census the family were living at 55 Northborne St, Gateshead & Thomas had returned to being a joiner. At home were children Ada (Maria), a draper’s assistant, Jane, John, Frederick (7), Ethel (5), Tom (3) & Charles (11 months).

Daughter Ada Maria married John William Gibson on September 21st, 1897 at Gateshead.

In 1900 daughter Jane Isabella married Philip Edward Young at Christ Church, Gateshead. Philip was born c1871 in America & was a craneman at an engine works in 1901. According to Jane Isabella’s granddaughter, Larrie Hicks, Jane & Philip emigrated to Canada in 1904, where they had 4 children – 3 boys & a girl.

In 1901 Thomas & Dorothy were living at 46 Coburg St, Gateshead & Thomas was now described as a house joiner. At home were children John Lumley, a house painter, Frederick, a debt collector, Ethel, a pawn broker’s assistant, Tom, & finally twins Sidney & Alfred aged 9. Daughter Ada & husband John William Gibson were living at Woodbine St, Gateshead where John was a housepainter. They had a 2 year old daughter Eva. (On July 31st, 1914 Ada & John Gibson & their 2 daughters, Eva & May emigrated to Sydney, Australia on the ‘Otway’.)

Thomas, aged 52, died on July 18th, 1904 at Gateshead.

In August 1907 son Tom enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry & was discharged by purchase of £2 in May 1908. He gave his occupation as a driver.

In 1911 widowed Dorothy was still living at 46 Coburg St with 4 of her children. Daughter Ethel was a shop assistant (pawn broker), sons Sydney & Alfred were both shop assistants (fish mongers) & son Frederick was a groom. They had 2 boarders Walter Foster (37), an actor, & his daughter Beatrice (8). It was noted on the census that Dorothy & Thomas had had 11 children, of whom 8 were still living. Son John Lumley had married in 1906 & he & his wife Isabella (nee Fenwick) were also living in Gateshead where John was now an insurance superintendent.

Son Frederick married Beatrice Maud Dryland in 1920 in Ashford, Kent.  Frederick lived to the grand old age of 103 & died in 1986 in Thanet, Kent.

Dorothy died on February 10th, 1930 at 46 Coburg St, Gateshead, aged 78.  Probate was granted on March 8th, 1930 to son John Lumley Pallister, assurance inspector & daughter Ethel Pallister.  Her effects were £248.

The 1939 register shows son John Lumley & his wife Isabella living at 141 Red Lane, Bolton, Lancs & John was an insurance superintendent.  Son Frederick & his wife were living at 165 Woodrow Ave, Hayes & Harlington, Middlesex in 1939 & he was a civil servant. 
By 1939 daughter Ethel had moved to Manchester & was living at 6 Clarendon Rd & was working as a pawn broker’s assistant.
Son Alfred & his wife Georgina (nee Crabbe) were living at 39 Cumberland St, Gateshead in 1939 & he was a poultry dresser.  Alfred’s twin brother Sydney & his wife Gertrude S (nee Leadbeater) & family were living at 34 Silverdale Terrace, Gateshead & Alfred was described as ‘permanent way asphalt’.
