John Stephenson [s.7.4]

John Stephenson was the fourth child of John Stephenson & Sarah Robinson christened July 29th, 1826 at Whitby.

On December 8th, 1846 John married Frances Estill at Whitby. Witnesses at the wedding were William Estill  & William Trueman, Frances’ brother-in-law.  Frances was the daughter of Ann & William Estill, a sailor, christened October 6th, 1815 at Whitby. 

In 1851 John & Frances were living at Mickleby, Yorks, where John was a boot & shoe maker. They had a daughter Hannah (3).

John & Frances had another daughter, Ann, in Oct-December 1851 before the death of John sometime before 1856.

The children of John Stephenson & Frances Estill were:

s.7.4.1 Hannah Stephenson born July-September 1847 at Mickleby; died February 24th, 1894 at Commercial St, Norton, Yorks

s.7.4.2  Ann Stephenson born Oct-December 1851 at Mickleby; died July 13th, 1919 at 7 Langdale Terr, Ruswarp, Whitby

Frances, known as Fanny, married widower William Trueman, a mariner, in Oct-December 1856 at Whitby.  William (born c1810 in Scarborough) had previously married Fanny’s sister, Mary Ann Estill in 1838 in Whitby but she died in 1854.  (Mary Ann herself was a widow when she married William, having previously been married to Richard Jones in 1836.) 

In 1861 Fanny was living at Tate Hill, Whitby (the home of the Trueman family in 1851) & described as the wife of a mariner, although husband William Trueman was not at home. William was a mate aboard the ship ‘Emily’ at Jackson Dock, West Hartlepool at the time of the census. Her 2 children from her first marriage, Hannah & Ann Stephenson, were listed with her as were William Estill Trueman (20), Frances Estill Trueman (9) & John Thomas Trueman (7). 

Frances Trueman died, aged 45, at Tate Hill in 1861 & was buried on November 12th, 1861 at Whitby.

William was listed as a widowed sailor in the Dean St, Scarborough Workhouse in 1881.

There is a death for William Trueman, aged 74, in Jan-March 1883 in Scarborough.
