Mary Stainsby was the fourth child of Robert Stainsby & Elizabeth Brewer born at Fen Bogg & christened April 21st, 1848 at Goathland, Yorks.
In 1851 Mary was living with her parents & brother & sisters at Westgate, Pickering.
By 1861 Mary was working as a kitchen maid for Hannah & Thomas Hobbs, a farmer & public house owner in Appleton-le-Street, a village near to Fryton where her parents were now living.
Mary married Joseph Walker on May 14th, 1864 at the Parish Church of Thornton, Pickering. Joseph was born c1844 at Hovingham, Yorks.
At the time of the 1871 census Mary & Joseph were living at Browns Buildings, Station St, Middlesbrough & Joseph was described as a ‘scavenger’. They had 4 children at this time – Anne (5), William (4), Kezia Elizabeth (2) & Marmaduke (6 months).
Joseph died in a mining accident aged just 26, & his death was registered in April-June 1871 in Middlesbrough.

On October 26th, 1872 Mary remarried at St John's parish church, Middlesbrough. Her second husband was Robert Ling & both gave their address as Spencer St, Middlesbrough. Robert was born at Blythburgh, Suffolk & christened June 7th, 1850 at nearby Westleton, Suffolk, the son of Mary Anne Ling.
Robert, an able bodied seaman, was on board the vessel, the Thames, moored at South Shoebury, Essex on the night of the 1881 census. Mary was at home with the family at 14 Spencer St, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough & it was noted that on the census that her husband was at sea. Children at home were Annie Walker (15), William Walker (14), a messenger, Kezia Walker (11), Marmaduke Walker (10), Cecilia Ling (6), Eliza J Ling (4) & Mary A Ling (3).
On May 20th 1888 daughter Annie Walker married Robert William Appleby, an engine fitter, at Middlesbrough. They & their family were living at 43 Bolckow St, Middlesbrough, near to Annie's mother at the time of the 1891 & 1901 censuses.
In 1891 Mary was again listed without her husband at 76 Bolckow St, Midlesbrough with children Kezia, a tailoress, Cecilia, a draper's assistant, (Eliza) Jane, a general servant, Mary A, & new additions Ellen (6), Robert (3) & Thomas (1). Robert was not found listed in the census & was presumably at sea. Son Marmaduke had followed in his step-father's footsteps & was a fireman aboard the vessel Dione in Tees Bay at the time of the census. Marmaduke was to marry Hellen Vickers in 1895. In the 1901 census Hellen was living in Middlesbrough with 2 children & her mother, but Marmaduke was again on a steam coastal trading vessel, the Glenmore, which was at Redcar Wharf, Middlesbrough at the time of the census.
Daughter Susannah married Rowland Charlton in 1895 & at the time of the marriage the family were still at 76 Bolckow St & father Robert was described as a mariner. Daughter Kezia married Daniel McGee, a grocer's assistant, in 1898 at Middlesbrough. Kezia & Daniel & daughter were living in Middlesbrough at the time of the 1901 census.
Robert died in July-September 1900, aged 50, at Middlesbrough.
In 1901 widowed Mary was still living at 76 Bolckow St with children Jane, a waitress at an inn, Mary A, Ellen, a dressmaker working from home with her own account, Robert, a tailor's errand boy & Thomas. Mary had also taken in 3 boarders to supplement her living. Daughter Susannah & her husband Rowland Charlton were still living in Middlesbrough at this time with 3 children.
Mary died soon after the census, aged 53, & was buried July 25th, 1901 at Linthorpe Cemetery, Middlesbrough.
Daughter Ellen Margaret married Thomas Craig in 1904 in Middlesbrough.
