st.1.4$ William Stone

William Stone was the fifth child of William Stone & Ann born c1827 at Tipton, Staffs.

In 1841 William was living at home with his parents, 5 brothers & 2 sisters in West Bromwich.

On November 20th, 1848 William married Maria Pooler at St Georges’ Church, Birmingham.  William was a sheet iron shearer at that time & he signed the marriage certificate whereas Maria made her mark.  Maria was christened November 25th, 1827 at Donnington Wood, Shropshire, the daughter of Rebecca & William Pooler, a collier.  At the time of the 1841 census Maria was living with her parents in Dudley.

In 1851 William & Maria were living at Crone Hill, West Bromwich & William was a sheet iron shearer.  They had a 1 month old son, William.  Sadly little William died in 1854 in Duke St, West Bromwich.  He was buried May 14th, 1854 at Christ Church, West Bromwich.

By 1861 William & Maria were living at New St, Smethwick.  William was described as hair? dresser.  They now had 3 children with them – Charles (8), Sarah Ann (6) & Rebecca (2).

In August 1869 William, aged 42, left for the US.  His destination was given as New York.

Maria & the 3 children followed William to the US & they were listed in the 1870 of Pennsylvania as living at 16th Ward, Pittsburgh, Allegheny.  William was described as working in the iron works & son Charles also worked in the iron works.

By the time of the 1880 US census William & Maria were living at Wyandotte, Wayne, Michigan.  William was still working in the iron mill.  All the children had left home.
