John Stone was the first child of John David Stone & Mary Hannah Storey born July-September 1880 at Pendleton, Lancashire.
In 1881 John & his parents were living at 24 Rhyll St, Pendleton where his father was an iron worker.
By 1891 John & his parents had moved to Townfield Cottages, Huyton, Widnes, Lancs. John now had 3 sisters.
John was found on HMS Excellent, a naval gunnery training establishment , in Portsmouth in 1901. He was listed as an ablebodied seaman.
John married Winifreda Tolley in Oct-December 1903 at Bolton, Lancs. At the time of the 1901 census Winifred was found as a patient at the Southport Convalescent Hospital & her occupation was given as laundress. Winifreda was born c1881 at Leicester, the daughter of Elizabeth & Charles Tolley, a coal miner.
On April 1st, 1909 John, a labourer, joined the Territorial Force of the Loyal North Lancs Regiment. He gave his address as 7 Fortune St, Burnden, Bolton, Lancs. This was his parents address in 1911.
In 1911 Winifreda (Winnie) was boarding at 209 Spotland Rd, Rochdale, Lancs. Winnie was noted as married & her occupation was a laundress at a steam laundry. At this time John was living at 3 Elton St, Bolton, Lancs & with him was a 33 year old widow, Rachel McManus, who was a domestic servant at a public house. It stated on the census that John had been married for 7 years & had had 2 children, only one of whom was alive. John was working as a labourer for a sewerage contractor. John & Winifred had in fact had 3 children & at the time of the 1911 census the 2 surviving children, Mary Hannah & Kathleen were living with their uncle Charles William Tolley & their grandmother, Elizabeth Tolley at 20 Kenyon St, Bolton. Later that year 1 year old Kathleen died.
