James Stone [st.2]

James Stones was the second child of Joseph Stones & Miranda Berber christened December 26th, 1798 at St Phillip’s, Birmingham.

James married Eliza Woolley on December 5th, 1819 at Stafford. Eliza was born c1800.

Eliza, aged 37, died in 1837 & was buried on May 16th at Dudley, Worcs.

st.2.2 Harriet Hannah Stone born Tipton, christened July 4th, 1824 at St Thomas, Dudley, Worcs; died April 24th, 1892 at Old Swinford, Stourbridge, Worcs
st.2.3 Esther Woolley Stone christened March 15th, 1829 at St Thomas, Dudley, Worcs; died July-September 1872 at Sunderland, Co Durham
st.2.4 Benjamin Stone christened October 17th, 1830 at St Thomas, Dudley, Worcs; died Jan-March 1912 at West Bromwich

st.2.6 Elizabeth Stone born Bilston, christened August 23rd, 1835 at St Thomas, Dudley, Worcs; buried February 11th, 1865 at Heath Lane Cemetery, West Bromwich

James, aged 39, married again on January 4th, 1838 at St Lawrence, Darlaston, Wolverhampton, Staffs. He married Mary Hebert, whose age at the time of marriage was given as 35. Mary was christened January 9th, 1803 at Bilston, Staffs, the daughter of John & Martha Hebert.

In 1841 James & Mary (Maria in census) were living at Hall Fields, Bilston, Wolverhampton. Children at home were Esther (12), Benjamin (10), James (8), Elizabeth (6) & Martha (2). James was an iron labourer.

James died, aged 47, on May 16th, 1847 at Blacklake,West Bromwich, his death being caused by disease of the brain.  Informant of the death was daughter Harriet.

Widowed Mary was living at Old Meeting St, West Bromwich at the time of the 1851 census & described as an annuitant. With her were children Harriett H (26), a ladies nurse, Esther, a tailoress, Benjamin, an iron roller, James, an iron shearer, & Elizabeth, Martha & Joseph (9). Living at the same address was Susannah Sargent, a 36 year old infant school teacher.

In 1861 Mary was still at Old Meeting St, number 5, with only son Joseph, a railway clerk, still at home. Susannah Sargent, now described as a teacher at British school was still living with Mary.

In 1871 Mary (67) was found with her daughter Hannah who had married John Bowater, an oil & tallow merchant. They were living at Queen St, West Bromwich with their 3 children – Phoebe, John & William.

In 1881 Mary was visiting her son Joseph, a commercial clerk in the iron trade, & his wife Elizabeth at 16 Whitehall Rd, Gateshead, Co Durham. Joseph had 4 children at this time – Lucy, Joseph H, William M & Mary E.

Mary died in April-June 1889, aged 86, at Gateshead.
