Thomas Wall [w.1.4]

Thomas Wall was the fourth child of Thomas Wall & Mary ? christened December 6th, 1840 at Smethwick, Staffs.

In 1841 & 1851 Thomas was living at home at Holyhead Rd, Wednesbury with his parents & brothers & sisters.

In 1861 he was still living at home at Cross St, Wednesbury & working as a forgeman.

On April 2nd, 1866 Thomas married Dinah Pimder at St Edmund’s, Dudley. Dinah was born c1845 at Rugby, Northants.

In 1871 Thomas & Dinah were living at 3 Middle Lane, Rotherham & Thomas was a wheelwright. They had 2 sons - Thomas Arthur (2) & George Richard (1 month).

By 1881 Thomas & Dinah had returned to Staffordshire & were living at Horseley Rd, Tipton (near Wednesbury). Thomas & George were still at home & there were now 4 more sons – Benjamin (7), Frank Charles (4), James Walter (2) & Walter William (5 months).

In 1891 they were still living at Horseley Rd, Tipton & Thomas was still a wheelwright. Sons Thomas & George were both working as labourers, Benjamin was a striker & Frank was a labourer. James & Walter were still at home & 2 more sons had arrived – Harry (8) & Fred (5) & they now had a 3 year old daughter Harriet Ann Victoria!

Thomas died in April-June 1898, aged 54, the death being registered at Dudley.

At the time of the 1901 census widow Dinah continued to live at Horseley Rd. The children still at home were Frank, an axel turner, James, an iron bridge builder, Walter, a wheelwright?, Harry & Fred were both apprentices ( to do with coach making) & Harriet was a domestic servant. Son Thomas had married Jessie Ann Holt in 1893 & they were living at 143 Horseley Heath, Tipton in 1901 with Jessie’s widowed mother, Rebecca Holt (63).  Thomas was an iron plater.  Son Benjamin had married Alice Hickman in 1900 & in 1901 they were living in Tipton where Benjamin was a forge blacksmith.

By 1911 son Thomas had become an iron bridge builder, & he & Jessie had adopted a son, Frank (7).  Jessie had given birth to one child who had sadly died.  They were living at 81 Great Bridge St, West Bromwich & mother-in-law Rebecca Holt was still with them.  In 1911 son Benjamin & his wife Alice were still living in Tipton & Benjamin was now an axle smith striker for the bridge works Wednesbury. 

Son Frank had married Mary Ann Hall in 1905 & in 1911 they were living at Langley Green where Frank was a mechanic in the engineering trade.  Son James & daughter Harriet were boarding together in 1911 at 17 Canal View, Tipton.  James was a boiler riveter & Harriet was a charwoman.  Harriet was to marry Enoch Norrey later in 1911. 

Son Walter married Alice Ingram in 1903 & in 1911 they were living at Wellington Rd, Tipton where Walter was a gas worker for the district council.  They had a 6 year old son Geoffry & a 5 year old daughter Elsie.   Son Fred had married Susan Elizabeth Archer just before the 1911 census & at that time they were living at Ocker Hill, Tipton where Fred was a scrap dealer.
