William Winder was the first child of William Winder & Mary Austin born 1825 at Burnham, Bucks & christened May 12th 1825 at St. Peter’s, Burnham.
In 1841 William was living at Walton St, Aylesbury, Bucks with his mother
& sisters Harriett (11), Mary Ann (9) & Charlotte (5). His mother Mary was described
as independent & his father, William, had just died.
In 1851 William was a house servant for Henry H Parish, a diplomat, & family who lived at Chesham St, St George Hanover Square, London.
William married Jane Buckland on April 15th, 1852 at the church of St Paul in the parish of St George Hanover Square, Middx. Jane was christened June 4th, 1826 at Taplow, Bucks, the daughter of William & Elizabeth Buckland. At the time of his marriage William (27) was described as a grocer of Lyall Place. William’s father’s occupation was given as ‘surveyor’ whereas 2 years earlier at his daughter Elizabeth’s wedding he was described as a mealman. Witnesses at the wedding were William Buckland, Jane’s father – a yeoman - & Harriett Anne Winder, William’s younger sister.
By 1861 William had become an inspector of railway rolling stock & he & Jane were living at Neath, Glamorgan, Wales. They had an 11 month old son, Henry Burns.
At the time of the 1871 census William was foreman of the Great Western Railway carriage factory, & the family were now living at Swansea.
They were still living in Swansea at 10 Terrace Rd in 1881 & William (56) was described as manager of the Great Western Railway Carriage Vans, & his son Henry (20) was now a railway clerk in the traffic department of GWR.
William & Jane were still living at the same address in 1891 & he continued to work for GWR as above. Son Henry had left home & was living with his wife Sarah J in Cardiff & working as a railway clerk.
By 1901 William, now 76, had retired & he & Jane (74) had returned to Burnham. William was described as living on his own means.
William, of Dawes East Cottage, Burnham died on April 1st, 1910 aged 85. Probate was granted to widow Jane on April 26th, 1910 & his effects were £102.
Widowed Jane was still living at Dawes East, Burnham on her own in 1911. She was described as living on private means, & it was also stated that she had had 5 children, none of whom were still living.
Jane died in 1913, aged 86, & was buried on March 7th, 1913 at Burnham.
